A fundamental part of the school's continued success is our close working partnership with our parents. In order to ensure the best possible support for our pupils we must establish and nurture a three way partnership between us as teachers, the pupils and their parents. It is only through this regular dialogue and close co-working we are able to ensure the best possible provision and support for our children and young people.
On these pages, we hope you can find relevant and useful information on the school and also find ways you can help and support your son/daughter.
Support with the Welsh Language
A vital part of this support is support with the Welsh language. The vast majority of pupils at Ystalyfera (over 85%) come from non-Welsh speaking homes. Through effective use of the most recent technologies (Porth Termau / Cysill / Canolfan Bedwyr), you can find very useful tools for pupils to complete homework tasks, undertake research or finish assessments at home or in school. These resources are available free of charge and can be downloaded on mobile phones, PC's or laptops.
Curriculum BookletsWe produce curriculum booklets for each year in Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) which summarise the work to be completed in each school term. These include information on homework, subject terminology, assessments and also which specific numeracy / literacy skills are developed within each unit of work.
Reports and parents eveningsDuring the year, you will receive an interim report, a full end of year report and an invitation to attend a Parents' Evening where you can meet with your son/daughter's individual class teachers. In addition we also hold information evenings on the curriculum, and pastoral and welfare information evenings. A full list of these events can be found on our calendar.
Regular Communication We produce a newsletter each half term which includes forthcoming events and valuable information on current news and events. You can also follow the school twitter account @ysgolystalyfera or the school council @CYYGY, if you wish to receive regular texts, you should provide your mobile number to the main school office
